Ventilation is the only kitchen equipment with a permanent opening to the outside, and on the First Coast that opening decides how the equipment ages. A hood on the barrier islands breathes salt air for its entire service life. A hood in a 1920s Riverside kitchen is fighting a duct route that was added decades after the house was built. The internal parts are much the same in both cases; the failure schedule is not.
The coastal problem
On Ponte Vedra Beach 32082, Jacksonville Beach 32250, Neptune Beach 32266, Atlantic Beach 32233, coastal St. Augustine 32084 and Amelia Island 32034, airborne salt attacks in a predictable sequence. Fasteners go first, then hinge and damper hardware, then the blower housing where it meets the duct, then the visible stainless.
Roof-mounted and inline remote blowers take the worst of it because they sit outside the conditioned envelope. The classic pattern is a blower that has run without complaint for years and then hums and trips: the bearing has seized in its housing, the motor cannot break away, and the overload does its job. That is a mechanical outcome of the environment, not a manufacturing defect, and it is why we ask where a remote blower is mounted before quoting anything.
Backdraft dampers are worth a mention on their own. A damper that has corroded part-open lets humid outside air into the duct all summer, which accelerates everything else downstream of it.
Noise is a diagnosis, not a complaint
Ventilation faults announce themselves acoustically long before they stop the machine. Two patterns are worth reporting accurately when you call:
Louder at low speed than at high. That is a balance problem. Grease loads unevenly on a blower wheel, and at certain speeds the imbalance hits a resonance in the housing. It is fixable, and it is much cheaper to address before the bearing wears.
A rattle that changes with the wind. That is nearly always the backdraft damper or a loose duct joint, not the appliance.
Downdrafts
Downdraft extractors have moving structure, which gives them a class of fault no wall hood has. Rising part-way and stopping, or refusing to retract, is usually the drive assembly or a position sensor rather than the extraction motor — which is often why the fan still works perfectly while the unit is stuck in the up position. They also have the least favourable capture geometry of any ventilation type, so a downdraft installed over a high-output professional rangetop can be doing everything correctly and still leave steam in the room.
Ducting in older houses
In the historic belt — Riverside, Avondale, Old Ortega, San Marco, Old Mandarin — hoods are frequently connected to a duct route that was improvised through a 1900s–1930s structure. Long horizontal runs, several elbows, and a reduction to fit between joists all cost static pressure. The consequence is a hood that performs well below its rating with nothing wrong inside it. Before we sell anyone a blower, we check what the duct is asking that blower to do.
Recirculating installations are a separate case: with no duct at all, filter condition is the whole story, and a charcoal filter past its life makes a correctly working hood look broken.
Boards and storms
Around 68 thunderstorm days a year cross the First Coast. Hood controls are low-cost boards in a high-heat, high-grease location, and repeated line transients finish them off. Lights working while the fan does nothing is the common presentation, and it is worth checking before assuming the motor.
Long outages add a second pattern. Matthew in 2016, Irma in 2017 and Helene in 2024 each cut power across parts of the region for days, and the hood controls that failed afterwards mostly failed weeks later, on an ordinary evening, with nothing obvious to connect them to the storm.
Parts and access
Ventilation is where access decides the price more than the part does. Liner and hood components are ordinary stock items; blower motors, run capacitors and damper assemblies are ordered against the serial number, because the same hood model has shipped with more than one blower over its life. A roof-mounted remote adds roof access and weather to the schedule, and an inline unit buried in a soffit sometimes adds a small amount of carpentry. All of it is quoted before it starts.
02 Diagnostic order
What a technician checks, and in what order
Order matters more than tooling. Each step below is cheaper, faster or more likely than the one after it, and every one of them has to be ruled out before the next is worth opening. A visit that starts in the middle of this list is how a second visit happens.

Where the blower actually is
A hood, an inline blower in a soffit and a roof-mounted remote are three different service jobs with three different access problems. Nothing else on this list can be planned until that is established, and it decides whether the work happens at the cooktop or on a roof.

Filters and the recirculating case
With no duct at all, filter condition is the entire performance story, and a charcoal filter past its life makes a correctly working hood look broken. On ducted hoods, loaded baffles cost capture before they cost airflow.

The duct route, not the appliance
Long horizontal runs, several elbows and a reduction to fit between joists all cost static pressure. A hood performing below its rating with nothing wrong inside it is common in older houses, and a larger blower does not fix a restrictive duct — it moves the noise up.

Backdraft damper and joints
A damper corroded part-open lets humid outside air into the duct continuously, and a rattle that changes with the wind is nearly always a damper or a loose joint rather than the machine.

Blower wheel balance and bearing
Louder at low speed than at high is an imbalance meeting a resonance in the housing — usually uneven grease loading, and much cheaper to correct before the bearing wears. A blower that hums and trips has passed that point: the bearing has seized and the overload is doing its job.

Control board and, on downdrafts, the drive
Lights working while the fan does nothing points at the control rather than the motor. On a downdraft, rising part-way or refusing to retract is usually the drive assembly or a position sensor, which is why the extraction fan often still runs perfectly while the unit is stuck up.
Parts for built-in and professional equipment are ordered against the serial number, not the model alone: the same model built two years apart does not always take the same component. Sealed-system parts, inverter boards and steam-generator assemblies are the ones that wait. Door hardware, gaskets, thermistors and fan motors usually do not.
Built-in equipment is fitted to the millimetre. A refrigerator column comes forward on rails and carries several hundred pounds with the doors on; an integrated dishwasher cannot move until its cabinet panel does. Reaching the back of either is frequently the longest part of a visit, and it is priced in the written estimate before it starts.
03 Coastal exposure
Salt air on the barrier islands
On the barrier islands, salt air is the corrosion driver: condenser fins, door hinges, fasteners and stainless trim go first.
Around 68 thunderstorm days a year. Repeated line transients are what kill appliance control boards here, far more often than a single direct strike.
Matthew in 2016, Irma in 2017 and Helene in 2024 each left parts of the region without power for days at a time. The work that follows a long outage rarely arrives during it: a control board or an inverter compressor that survived the loss and the restart often fails weeks later.

The hood over the range sounded like a bearing was going and smelled of salt. He pulled the blower, cleaned corrosion off the housing and fitted a new motor. Far quieter, and he warned me Atlantic Beach air will do it again.
