Amelia Island, Fernandina Beach, Yulee and Callahan spread across the top of our coverage area, the island end of it is the most corrosive environment we work in, and the far end of it is inland and rural. A visit here is planned differently from a visit anywhere else we go, and it is worth saying how before anything about the appliances. We schedule the county in blocks rather than as individual calls. A same-week appointment is realistic; a same-day one is not. That also changes what travels on the van: with a second trip expensive in time rather than in parts, we ask more questions at the booking, and the model and serial number matter more here than anywhere else in the region, because they are what let a likely part come with the technician instead of being ordered after the visit. ## Salt air is the dominant variable What Nassau County does have, unambiguously, is exposure. Amelia Island is a barrier island, and the corrosion sequence there is the same one we see on Ponte Vedra Beach and the Duval beaches, running on a longer exposure. Fasteners go first. Then hinge pins and damper hardware. Then the thin aluminium fin stock of any condenser coil. Then the visible stainless, which is the point at which most owners notice. The important consequence is that the appliance rarely complains about temperature. A built-in refrigerator, a wine cabinet or an outdoor unit with a corroded fin pack cannot shed heat efficiently, so it compensates by running longer. The compressor is doing more work every day to hold the same setpoint, and the first honest symptom is run time, not warmth. On island addresses we ask whether the unit still cycles off before we ask what the shelf temperature reads. Outdoor kitchens on the ocean side are the shortest-lived equipment we service anywhere on the First Coast. That is not a product defect; it is a consequence of where the equipment lives, and it is worth budgeting for rather than being surprised by. ## Ventilation on the island Roof-mounted and inline remote blowers sit outside the conditioned envelope, and on Amelia Island they take the full salt load for their entire life. The signature failure is a blower that ran without complaint for years and then hums and trips: the bearing has seized in its housing, the motor cannot break away, and the overload cuts in. Backdraft dampers corroded part-open are the other common find, and they quietly let humid outside air into the duct all summer. ## Fernandina Beach, Yulee and Callahan The county splits into three service problems. Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach hold most of the built-in and professional equipment, along with the oldest housing in the county — kitchens where the cabinet opening, not the appliance specification, decides what can be fitted. Yulee is newer construction, easier access, and less exposure once you are off the island. Callahan is inland, further west, and the drive is the main constraint. Nassau is the longest run in our coverage area, and the three parts of it route differently: the island and Fernandina Beach are one block, Yulee another, and Callahan is far enough west that it usually shares a day with whatever else is inland. None of that changes the price — the diagnostic is the same figure anywhere we go — but it does change how quickly a date can be offered, and we would rather say that up front than miss a window. ## Storms and long outages Around 68 thunderstorm days a year cross northeast Florida, and Nassau County gets its share. The damage pattern is the same everywhere on the First Coast — repeated line transients degrading control boards over a season, rather than one dramatic strike. On the island it compounds the corrosion problem, because a board in a damp, salt-laden environment has less margin to begin with: corrosion at connectors and solder joints raises resistance before any transient arrives. Long outages leave a separate signature. Matthew in 2016, Irma in 2017 and Helene in 2024 each cut power across parts of the county for days at a time, and the work that follows a long outage rarely arrives during it. A control board or an inverter compressor that survived both the loss and the restart tends to fail weeks later, on an ordinary evening, with nothing obvious connecting it to the storm. If a unit has been through a multi-day outage recently, that is worth mentioning at the booking. ## Parts, and the honest limit Components are ordered against the serial number rather than the model alone, because the same model built two years apart does not always take the same part. Door hardware, gaskets, thermistors, fan motors and capacitors are ordinary stock. Sealed-system parts, inverter boards and blower assemblies are the ones that wait. There is a limit worth stating on an island. Where corrosion has reached the condenser bay and the cabinet around it, a sealed-system repair can cost a large fraction of the value of the unit and still leave the environment unchanged. We put that on the written estimate as a number rather than as a recommendation, and where the manufacturer's own network is required — an appliance still inside a warranty period, for instance — we say so instead of taking the job. Sealed-system work on refrigeration means handling refrigerant, which is federally regulated.
