# Dishwashers

Built-in, panel-ready and fully integrated dishwashers, including drawer units. The appliance where the installation causes as many calls as the machine.

## What the symptom usually means

- **White film on glassware and stainless after a normal cycle** — Deposit from the supply or a rinse-aid setting, not a pump fault
- **Cycle finishes but dishes on the top rack are still wet or dirty** — Spray-arm holes partly blocked, or a diverter not switching levels
- **Standing water left in the sump** — Filter or drain restriction, a missing high loop, or a drain pump losing head
- **Integrated door sagging out of line with the cabinet panel** — Hinge spring tension no longer matched to the weight of the panel
- **Cycle time has quietly doubled over a year** — Heater working against a deposit layer, or an inlet valve delivering less water
- **Detergent dispenser not opening mid-cycle** — Latch mechanism obstructed by residue, or a failed wax motor

## The order a technician works through it

1. **Filter, sump and spray-arm rotation** — Three things that take two minutes to look at and account for a large share of poor-wash complaints. A partly blocked arm degrades the spray pattern before it degrades the volume, so coverage on the top rack fails while the bottom rack still looks fine.
2. **Drain path, high loop and disposal knockout** — Standing water in the sump is an installation fault at least as often as a pump fault. A drain hose without a high loop and a disposal knockout plug that was never removed both produce the identical symptom, and both are free to rule out.
3. **Fill volume and inlet** — A machine that is under-filling washes badly at every level and stretches the cycle without reporting anything. It is checked before the pump because a weak fill looks exactly like a weak pump from the rack.
4. **Heat and cycle length** — The control holds a cycle open until the target temperature arrives, so a heater that is working harder than it should shows up as a wash that has quietly grown by an hour rather than as an error.
5. **Diverter, wash pump and drain pump** — Only now, once fill, drain and heat are known good. A diverter that is not switching levels and a pump losing head present similarly from outside the machine and differently on a meter.
6. **Door, panel and hinge tension** — On integrated units this is a separate fault class from washing altogether. The custom panel is heavy and the springs are tensioned to match it, so the adjustment has to be made with the panel fitted and against the real load.

A dishwasher is a heat exchanger, a pump and a set of nozzles, installed in a
hole in the cabinetry and plumbed into two services it does not control. That
last part is why a large share of dishwasher calls are not really about the
dishwasher.

## Start at the cheap end

The order matters more than the tooling. Filter, sump, spray-arm rotation,
drain path: four things that cost minutes to inspect and explain a great many
poor-wash complaints outright. Only when those are known good does a pump
become a reasonable hypothesis, and only then is it worth pulling the machine
out of the run to reach one.

Working from the expensive end backwards is how a circulation pump gets
replaced on a machine that was under-filling. The pump was never the fault; the
symptom was the same from the rack, and the second visit is the one that finds
it.

## Nozzles, coverage and the top rack

Spray-arm holes are sized to produce a specific pattern at a specific pressure.
As anything narrows them — food soil, deposit, a fragment of label — the pattern
degrades before the total volume does. Coverage fails from the outside of the
pattern inwards, which is why the top rack stops getting properly washed while
the bottom rack looks unchanged.

Owners read that as a pump problem. It usually is not, and the test is simple:
spin each arm by hand for free rotation, then hold each one to the light and
look through the holes.

## Drainage is usually an installation question

A dishwasher that leaves water in the sump is not always a pump fault. Two
installation errors produce the identical symptom: a drain hose routed without
a high loop, so the machine siphons water back from the disposal, and a
disposal knockout plug that was never removed when the appliance was connected.
Neither is a component failure and neither justifies a part.

Both are more common in kitchens that have been remodelled by more than one
contractor over the years, which describes a great deal of the housing stock
across Duval and St. Johns. It costs nothing to look under the sink before
ordering anything, and we do that first.

## Fully integrated machines

Panel-ready and fully integrated dishwashers add a mechanical problem that has
nothing to do with washing. The custom panel is heavy, and the door springs are
tensioned to match it. When the door starts to fall open rather than glide, or
sits a few millimetres proud of the neighbouring cabinet, that tension has
drifted or a cable has stretched. It is quick work, but it has to be done with
the panel fitted so the adjustment is made against the real load.

The panel also decides how the machine comes out. An integrated dishwasher
cannot move until its panel does, and in the historic belt — Riverside,
Avondale, Old Ortega, San Marco, Old Mandarin — the panel is sometimes attached
to cabinetry that was fitted around the machine after installation. Then the
trim comes off before the appliance does. We include that in the estimate
rather than discovering it on the day.

Drawer dishwashers are a separate case again: two independent wash systems in
one cabinet opening, each with its own pump, its own drain and its own control.
A fault in the upper drawer says nothing about the lower one.

## Film, residue and the limits of a part

Film on glassware is the complaint most likely to end in a replaced component
that changes nothing. Detergent addresses soil; it does not address deposit
left by the water itself, and adding more of it does not help. The productive
corrections are the rinse-aid setting, the machine's own water setting matched
to what actually arrives at the house, and — where an owner wants to go
further — treatment upstream of the appliance.

Replacing a working circulation pump for this complaint is money spent on the
wrong problem, and we will say so in the written estimate rather than fit the
part and let the film come back.

## Heat, cycle length and what the control knows

The control does not measure how well the machine is washing. It holds a cycle
open until the water reaches its target temperature and then moves on. Anything
that slows heating therefore stretches the cycle rather than raising an error,
and a wash that used to take two hours and now takes three — with no other
change — is usually reporting that, not a control fault.

That is worth knowing before a board is suspected. Boards do fail here, and
after a long outage or a hard restart they fail weeks later rather than on the
day, but a lengthening cycle is a thermal symptom first and an electronic one
second.
